Yogesh Samsi

Recognised in the world today as a leading tabla artiste, exhibiting consummate artistry both as a soloist and accompanist. The son of the renowned vocalist Late Pandit Dinkar Kaikini, Yogesh was initiated into tabla by his father at the tender age of four, and later received guidance. Yogesh received intense training for twenty three years, maturing into one of the most sought after tabla artistes in India today. His style is marked by an unmatched combination of power, sensitivity, knowledge of tradition, tonal clarity, and aesthetics.

Yogesh has played with many of the top ranking classical instrumentalists, vocalists and dancers of India, including Pt Shivkumar Sharma, Pt Hariprasad Chaurasia, Pt Bhimsen Joshi, Ustad Vilayat Khan, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Pt Dinkar Kaikini, and Pt Birju Maharaj. He has also had the privilege of accompanying Ustad Allah Rakha and his son the great maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain in their solo performances, and has performed duets with Ustad Zakir Hussain. Apart from accompaniment, Yogesh has performed numerous memorable solo performances in India and abroad. He has been featured in many of the world’s most prestigious venues, including: Carnegie Hall, New York; Kennedy Center, Washington DC;

Theatre de la Ville, Paris; Opera House, Sydney; Barbican Centre, London; Bolshoi Theatre, Moskow; Esplanade Theatre, Singapore, to name a few.

Outside of the authentic tradition that he carries forward, Yogesh also embraces collaboration with artists for sounds that fuse music from various world music traditions. In this spirit, he has performed with artists including Taufiq Qureshi, Ranjit Barot, Louis Banks, Shujaat Khan, Karsh Kale, Kayhan Kalhor, and many more.

Besides performing, Yogesh is very committed to educating students and listeners about his art and the rich legacy of his style of tabla playing, the Punjab Gharana. In more recent times, to further the exploration and study of Punjab Gharana, Yogesh has continued efforts to revive old compositions of both the Punjab tradition as well as the compositions of Pandit Sushil Kumar Jain.

As a pedagogue, he has been very actively conducting workshops and lecture-demonstrations in music institutions in India, USA, UK, South Africa and Japan. He is also a highly respected teacher, having a large body of students worldwide. Understanding the need for a traditional art to move with the times, he has created a syllabus for learning tabla designed specifically for teachers in the West, and also worked on an instructional CD-Rom about tabla which is available for students.

Yogesh is a member of the advisory board for the music department at Pune University, the Saaz School of Music London, and is a chief advisor for educational activities and promotion of Indian Classical music for the reputed music organisation Darbar, in London.

Yogesh has currently been appointed as a Guru along with other Gurus like Pt Ulhas Kashalkar, Pt Suresh Talwalkar, Smt N.Rajam and Pt Hariprasad Chaurasia at the Indian Classical Music Gurukul run by the M.I.T group of Institutes In Pune(Loni) which aims at developing professional musicians in the future.

Reviews

This was almost painfully reflective music, ending, finally, in an exuberant improvisatory interchange with Samir Chatterjee, whose Tabla playing also seemed less percussive than vocal. – The New York Times, 11/10/94.

The superb tabla player Samir Chatterjee joined the conversation in the second movement, pulsing tribute to the legendary Indian violinist L. Subramanium, and the music kicked into high gear, Kurkowicz’s scurrying violin riding Chatterjee’s intricate drumming over Technicolor splashes from the orchestra. Chatterjee’s solo legerdemain foreshadowed a violin cadenza, improvised by Kurkowicz in a slightly disparate Romantic style; an extended give-and-take between the two enthused soloists anchored the finale, framed by a torrential, exuberant tune up by the entire band, propelled by Chatterjee’s rhythmic authority and Kurkowicz’s energy. – Boston Globe (Matthew Guerrieri), October 22nd, 2007 about Swara Yantra of Shirish Korde performed with Boston Philharmonic

Tabla player Pandit Samir Chatterjee is a walking history book when it comes to Indian music. – WNYC (NPR)

This (‘Phoolan Devi Songs’ with Da Capo Chamber Orchestra at Markin Concert Hall) is a colorful, attractive piece, set on a lush, gaudy bed of amplification, aiming at an entertaining stylistic fusion; ….The highlight was the tabla playing of Samir Chatterjee in the final scene, which stood out from the other instruments with the kind of vivid, exciting performance that draws Western composers to a non-western music in the first place. - Anne Midgette, The New York Times, June 8th, 2006

The remarkable tabla virtuoso Chatterjee's playing is rather unique among tabla artists as his impeccable mastery of rhythm is expressed with a rather vocal-like quality. His tabla speaks the patterns, adding a commentary to the rhythm and interplay with the sitar. A fine collaboration. - Allan Evans, Rhythm September 1996

Chatterjee is a good foil for the sarangi virtuoso, as his drumming works in the service of the raga and of Mishra. There is none of the flashy "bird-in-a-bottle" showboating, which has infected much of contemporary tabla drumming. Mr. Chatterjee's solid support and sense of restraint are to be commended. - Richard Henderson, The Beat

Chatterjee, who can sing and then play back the most complex patterns in the manner of great masters, also senses how to highlight more compact, swing-oriented parts through shifts in accents and dynamics. – The Boston Globe, October 16, 1998

Samir Chatterjee gave detailed and forceful Tabla Lahara (solo) in ‘Jahamptal’. The crispness and clarity of his ‘bol’s and balanced synchronization of ‘Tabla’ (the right- hand drum) and ‘Bayan’ (the left-hand drum) made his recital quite enjoyable. – The Statesman, Calcutta, 08/29/87.

Tabaliya Samir Chatterjee made audibly visible those divisional breaths-in-rhythm that is as much music as music itself. His intimate and broadened stretch of motif accentuation, his extemporizations, richly surrounded the dance figures wrought by Jonathan Hollander. Samir’s rhythmic play acted as a continuous narrative, capable of solemn declamation as well as celebration of the human form and of the life-giving elements of nature. – Sruti, March, 1996.

Displaying consummate control and perfection, the artiste (Samir Chatterjee) enthralled the listeners with a very traditional and systematic exposition of ‘Jhamptaal’. Some of the ‘Quidas’ and ‘Tukre’ (types of compositions) were delectable for their intricacy and close finishing. –The Telegraph, Calcutta, September, 1987.

The concert became more enjoyable due to the high quality of accompaniment of Samir Chatterjee on the tabla. The distinct and defined tone of his bols filled the atmosphere with melody. – Anandabazar Patrika, Calcutta, 03/09/90.

The movement inventions were equally unpredictable. Neil Applebaum traded increasingly complex and spontaneous rhythmic patterns with Samir Chatterjee in “Tabla Tap Talk”. – The Washington Post, 8/17/96.

On Blue Incantation, guitarist Sanjoy Mishra’s compositions reveal an intriguing and ingratiating raga influence, underscored by Samir Chatterjee’s tablas throughout most of the album. Their combined sound during “Bach in Time” (based on J.S. Bach’s gavotte and Rondeau from Lute Suite No.3) is fascinating and quite enchanting. – AUDIO, U.S.A., 1996.

Chatterjee uses the Tabla to add an extra melodic touch, rather than remaining limited to a percussive role. – InPittsburg, 09.09.98

SYNC’s first album 'PORT OF ENTRY' does not at all sound effortfully avantgardistic or experimental - as one might have expected of a musician with Ned Rothenberg's background. Rather than that, the eight tracks come across in an explicitly harmonic and relaxed manner; a merit, which we attribute mainly to Samir Chatterjee, whose Tablas provide a percussive basis of an airy, light-footed quality. Rec'order pages - 22.02.99

“Unusual techniques require unusual technicians”. In SYNC’s PORT OF ENTRY Samir Chatterjee weaves his discreet drumming. It is especially the warm-sounding and intimate Tabla-accompaniment by Chatterjee, which fuses differing concepts of Jazz into one term: openness. From the Northern Indian regions Chatterjee brought along that sound which appeals so religiously, but nevertheless - or maybe just because of that feature - adds remarkable accents to the western-urban-oriented music. Jazzthetik Nr. - 01.02.99

And not enough praise can be given to Samir Chatterjee's tabla playing, which supported almost all of the musical material (many sequences, both musical and choreographic, were dubblings of the tabla). - Theodore Bole, bay Windows 05/04/00

‘Seductive drumming of Samir’. – The Morning Call, Allentown, PA, 05/17/95.

Both the artists were accompanied on the Tabla by Samir Chatterjee, who added color to the entire performance. – Daily Bhaskar, Bhopal, 03/18/81.

The glory of the program's first half was Samir Chatterjee's "Rite Rhythm," composed last year for Ethos and Eric Phinney, who is currently studying with the distinguished Indian Tabla player. The work features percussion from all over the world, including Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and America. ... The work had all four players participate in a complex rhythmic dialogue that remained miraculously comprehensive.

V. Selvaganesh

Selvaganesh was born in Chennai to Grammy-winner T.H. "Vikku" Vinayakram, a legendary musician and also a former member of the original fusion group Shakti. He is also the grandson of Sri T. R. Harihara Sarma, who founded the Sri Jaya Ganesh Tala Vadya Vidyalaya (Sri JGTV school) in Chennai.  Selvaganesh had his initial training at his grandfather's school and then under his uncle, Ghatam Vidwan Shri T H Subashchandran, one of the leading musicians in the world of rhythm. Thumping into the musical world at age 10, Selvaganesh has been mesmerizing the audience with his immaculate style and innate creativity.  Born into a family of musicians, it is no wonder that rhythm flows in his blood.

Apart from playing authentic Carnatic Music, he has performed in many Fusion, Jazz, Blues, Flamenco, Symphony Orchestra, Celtic Music, Latin Music, DJ Music, World Music, Talavadya (Percussion Ensemble) and Jugalbandhi concerts and has been part of numerous International Music Festivals with renowned Indian Musicians like Dr L Shankar, Dr.L.Subramaniam, Pandit Jasraj, Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, He has also worked with many leading music directors in India. He has performed atCarnegie Hall in the US along with Sh T H Vikku Vinayakram and Ustad Zakir Hussain

Selvaganesh gained world fame through tours with John McLaughlin's group Remember Shakti. He helps his father, Grammy-winner T.H. "Vikku" Vinayakram, to run the Sri JGTV school and train a new generation of percussionists. He has also composed and produced albums, and played with the Swedish bass virtuoso Jonas Hellborg and American guitar player Shawn Lane.  His debut international solo album, Soukha was released in 2006 featuring all other regular members of Remember Shakti including John McLaughlin, Zakir Hussain, U. Srinivas and Shankar Mahadevan, as well as sitar player Niladri Kumar and Selvaganesh's father T.H. "Vikku" Vinayakram. He has also formed a new group called Dr JSM, with the UK-based Goan songwriter/producer Dr.Joel and the young Carnatic singer Mahesh. Their Indo-Celtic album entitled "Turn on the Dreams" was released in the UK in 2005.  He performed in the prestigious United Nations day in New York in 2009.
He has composed music for Mira Nair’s movies "Vanity Fair" and"Monsoon Wedding"
While the kanjeera appears to be a simple instrument, in the hands of Selvaganesh, it produces a surprisingly large palette.  “He has transformed the sound and identity of his instrument—he makes that thing sound like a huge drum kit—and all the actual playing is done with one hand.”

Swaminathan

Swaminathan is the grandson of Padhmasri T.H.vinayakram and the son of
V. Selvaganesh. Being born in a family devoted
to traditional music, Swaminathan started learning kanjeera when he was
4 years old under the guidance of his grandfather and father. He gave his
first performance in a concert at the age of 12 accompanying his
grandfather.

He started his carreer with “issai mazhalai “ an initiative by Abhaswaram
RAMJI, who gave opportunities for young talents to showcase their
expertise.

He takes pride in playing alongside his grandfather “Vikku ji” in tours around the globe. Vikku ji introduced him into world fusion group “MYNTA”.
His father Shri V Selvaganesh and Swaminathan started doing duo
concerts and the very first performance with both of them together was
held at Goa festival of music in “KALA ACADAMEY” which was
followed by several musical tours in India.

Along with his musical friends and his uncle “V. Umashankar”, he played
during the Chennai super kings’ match held at chennai . And he also
performed in zee TV’s “saregamapa’ and many television shows.

Swaminathan had a opportunity to share the stage with legends like Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia, Balamurali Krishna, Ustad Zakir Hhussain. When his grandfather Vikku-ji started the group named “3G”, he joined his father V. Selvaganesh so three generations of percussionists shared the stage.

Drum Workshop - Daniel Weiss

  • Chhandayan Center for Indian Music (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Daniel Weiss will conduct a workshop on the drum-set to the benefit of those who would like to learn and explore more about he xceptional technique and approach that has developed and exemplified n western drumming ver the past decade. To describe Dan's technique simply as 'Extended Technique' would be minimizing the significance of the evolution he has initiated; it would be an oversight to all of the number of hours he as spent in translating some of the most beautiful repertoire of tabla on to the drum set. While most of the non-Indian musicians take to South Indian (Carnatic) rhythmic system to satisfy their Indian inclination, Dan chose tabla - with all its splendor of tonal and poetic beauty, transforming rhythmic complexity into a high level of aesthetic quality.

Daniel Weiss

Dan Weiss has been hailed as one of the top five jazz drummers in The New York Times, and his large ensemble recording “Fourteen” made the top ten list of their best recordings of 2014. Weiss’s innovative drumming and forward thinking compositions have been pushing musical limits for years. He has been studying tabla under his guru Pandit Samir Chatterjee for twenty years. He currently lives in Brooklyn where he continues to perform, tour, teach while continuing his study of tabla, Hindustani vocal, and classical piano.
