Drum Workshop - Daniel Weiss

  • Chhandayan Center for Indian Music 4 West, 43rd Street, #618 New York, NY 10036 United States (map)

Daniel Weiss will conduct a workshop on the drum-set to the benefit of those who would like to learn and explore more about he xceptional technique and approach that has developed and exemplified n western drumming ver the past decade. To describe Dan's technique simply as 'Extended Technique' would be minimizing the significance of the evolution he has initiated; it would be an oversight to all of the number of hours he as spent in translating some of the most beautiful repertoire of tabla on to the drum set. While most of the non-Indian musicians take to South Indian (Carnatic) rhythmic system to satisfy their Indian inclination, Dan chose tabla - with all its splendor of tonal and poetic beauty, transforming rhythmic complexity into a high level of aesthetic quality.

Daniel Weiss

Dan Weiss has been hailed as one of the top five jazz drummers in The New York Times, and his large ensemble recording “Fourteen” made the top ten list of their best recordings of 2014. Weiss’s innovative drumming and forward thinking compositions have been pushing musical limits for years. He has been studying tabla under his guru Pandit Samir Chatterjee for twenty years. He currently lives in Brooklyn where he continues to perform, tour, teach while continuing his study of tabla, Hindustani vocal, and classical piano.
