Two Sessions - 11AM - 1PM on Saturday and Sunday

This workshop will focus on how vocalists can successfully present the emotional quality of raga as well as use laya an rhythm creatively.

Hindustani classical vocal studies with Pandit Sanjoy Banerjee are both rigorous and engaging.  Dedicated students gain a solid foundation in the Kirana tradition (gharana) of pure-classical raga presentation (khayal) as well as light-classical songs while becoming versed in the elements that give rise to the vibrant and ancient tradition of Hindustani classical music.  Sanjoy ji’s deep knowledge provides the opportunity for life-long learning for the most ambitious students as well as those for whom Hindustani music is an avocation.  Sanjoy ji was a Scholar at the prestigious ITC Sangeet Research Academy and was designated by his distinguished gurus – the Late Pt. A. Kanan and the Late Sangeet Bidushi Malabika Kanan – as a worthy successor to their lineage.

During his teaching season in New York City Sanjoy ji will be accompanied by his senior disciple Namami Karmakar, who is regarded as one of the finest vocalists among the younger generation of the Kirana Gharana.  She had her initial training under Smt. Malini Mukherjee Bhowmick then began learning under the Late A Kanan and the Late Sangeet Bidushi Malabika Kanan before continuing training under their senior disciple Sanjoy ji.  At present she is a faculty member at Kolkata Suromurchhana imparting guidance to students in Kolkata, India and internationally.  She has a master degree in classical vocal music from the prestigious Rabindra Bharati University.
