Tabla Group Classes

Tabla

Learn the beautiful art of Tabla-playing in small group classes of 10 students or less. Classes are offered throughout the year on Thursday evenings. Registration is required for the month. Admission is open to all ages and levels. Individual attention is given to each student. Students learn basic to advanced techniques and compositions and receive relevant contextual information. They are also prepared for an annual recital usually held at the end of June. The 2024 recitals will be held on June 22nd at the Chhandayan Center for Indian Music, NYC and online on June 23rd.

Instrument: Tabla sets can be provided for the lessons, if requested in advance. Tabla sets are also available for purchase from our store.
Dress Code: Casual, comfortable and decent.
All absences should be notified in advance. Every student should come to the class with a designated notebook.

Thursday schedule: Group A (Beginners) at 6 pm; Group B (Intermediate) at 7 pm, unless otherwise specified.

Zoom will be used for online classes. Before joining the class on zoom, please set the ‘suppress background noise’ to low. The option for that is in the ‘audio settings’ window, which can be found after clicking on the arrow next to the ‘mute’ button.

Registration is for the month or semester, not per class. If a student has to miss a class, there will be no refund or make-up class/es offered for the missed class/es​. If Chhandayan has to cancel a class, a make-up class or refund options will be offered. Please click here for more details.

Hindustani Singing

Learn the beautiful art of Hindustani (North Indian Classical) Music. These are small size group classes and individual attention is given even in a group setting. Classes are open to students of all ages and backgrounds. There is no pre-requisite. Instruments such as harmonium, tanpura and tabla are provided for the lessons.

Students learn the subtle nuances of Indian classical singing while maintaining a balance between ancient and modern approaches. Groups are organized in different levels, as determined by the Guru at the time of registration. Enrollment to the group class is open to students of all ages, genders and ethnicity.

The class is held on Fridays from 8.05 to 8.55 pm.

Hindustani Vocal Classes with Namami Karmarkar

Learn the beautiful art of Hindustani (North Indian) Classical singing with Namami Karmarkar. These are small size group classes with a maximum of 5 students. Idividual attention is given to each student. There is no pre-requisite. Instruments such as harmonium, tanpura and tabla are provided for the lessons.

Students learn the subtle nuances of Indian classical singing while maintaining a balance between ancient and modern approaches. Groups are created and organized in different levels, as determined by the Guru at the time of registration. Enrollment to the group class is open to students of all ages, genders and ethnicity.

The classes are held on Fridays from 7.30 pm.

Vocal Classes with Namami Karmarkar

Kathak Dance: Group Classes

Learn the beautiful art of Kathak. These are small size group classes, and individual attention is given to each student. 

You will learn the north Indian classical dance form originated from the art of storytelling. In addition to expression, this dance form is also known for rhythmic footwork.

Beginners: Sundays 1 pm (50 mts. class)
Intermediates: Alternate Sundays 11.30 am (50 mts. class)

Odissi Group Dance Class

Learn Odissi Dance with Radhika Samson.
Radhika is a highly talented Odissi dancer. She received her initial training from Guru Dilip Mohapatra. Currently Radhika is taking advanced training under the tutelage of Smt. Sujata Mohapatra, leading soloist and disciple of Late Padma Vibhushan Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra. Radhika’s performances in prestigious platforms have been highly appreciated for her remarkable confidence and grace in blending abhinaya and nritta in its pure form.

These classes are held on Wednesdays at 6 pm.

Orissi Dance (Radhika Samson)


Sitar Group Class



Learn Sitar with Radhika Samson.
Radhika Samson is a sitar artist of the young generation. She studied under the guidance of the world-renowned Hansaveena maestro Pandit Barun Kumar Pal, a senior disciple of Bharat Ratna Pt. Ravi Shankar. She was under the traditional guru-shihsya paramara (master-disciple grooming) with her guru, studying at the Ravi Shankar Institute of Music and Performing Arts established in New Delhi. 

Radhika has performed at several prestigious platforms in the past, which have been appreciated by audiences and critics alike. She has performed in New Delhi at the Ravi Shankar Centre as part of the George Harrison Festival. She has had the privilege of performing with her guru Pt. Barun Pal on several occasions. She has successfully performed at festivals in India and abroad. 

Owing to her affinity and natural inclination towards the Dhrupadi Ang of Indian Classical Music, in the year 2019, Guru Pandit Barun Kumar Pal ji formally blessed and initiated Radhika with the ancient instrument, the Surbahar. Past

Bharatnatyam Group Class

Mayuri Karanth, a seasoned Bharathanatyam artist based in New York City, is dedicated to elevating this classical dance form globally. She was initiated into Bharathanatyam and is mentored by her mother and Guru Smt. Mamatha Karanth. Mayuri brings with her a wealth of 23 years of experience in the field of Bharathanatyam. She has given over 150 performances across India and USA. With a vision of pushing artistic boundaries, Mayuri aspires to share this art form with her students and witness their transformation into a newer, more empowered version of themselves.

In today's fast-paced and technology-driven world, it's easy to feel disconnected from ourselves. Bharathanatyam offers a gateway to reconnect, to find balance and harmony within ourselves and with the world around us. Bharathanatyam is an ancient South Indian dance form, passed down through generations - known for its elegance, precision, and spiritual depth. Through disciplined practice and dedication, they will not only master the art form but also discover a newfound confidence and self-expression.

You will learn both the Nritta (pure dance) and Abhinaya (expressional dance) aspects, allowing you to express yourself fully through body movements and storytelling. The training will progress from fundamental steps to advanced dance sequences over time.

Small size group class with Individual attention given. Experience the thrill of collective learning and shared progress. Enrollment in the group class is open to all genders and ethnicities.

Dress code: A cotton Salwar Kameez

Beginner group classes: Every Monday, at 6.00 pm (50 minutes class) - The age requirements (6 – 14 years)

Beginner & Intermediate group classes: Every Monday, at 7.00 pm (50 minutes class) - Age requirements (15 years & above)

Harmonium Group Classes

The harmonium has become an essential instrument for accompaniment of Indian music as well as a solo instrument.

Come learn how to play under the tutelage of Srikar Ayyalasomayajula. Srikar grew up in central New Jersey and currently lives in Brooklyn. He has learnt Harmonium from Guru Sri Hemant Kulkarni in New Jersey for over ten years. Srikar has performed harmonium solo pieces in a number of concerts and competitions in harmonium growing up, including winning first prize in national competitions conducted by Marathi Vishwa, Academy of Indian Music and Fine Arts, Bharat Sevashram, etc. Apart from solo performances, Srikar has also provided dynamic as energetic Harmonium saath to artists from around the world regularly for over a decade. Srikar was also the Music Chair of Michigan Sahana, the premier Indian Classical Music and Dance Organization at the University of Michigan and had been organizing and performing in their concerts throughout his time at the university. After graduating, Srikar had been continuing to be a part of both classical accompaniment and fusion collaborations across the country.

Classes will be given each Tuesday starting at 6PM.

Learn Tabla under the careful guidance of Samir Chatterjee. This is one-on-one private lesson scheduled according to mutual convenience. Techniques, intonation, simple to advanced compositions in various talas (rhythm cycles) and layas (tempo) are taught together with essential information related to the subject.

Samir Chatterjee also teaches Indian rhythm and theory of Indian music. He has been on the faculty at several reputed institutions and authored several books and articles on tabla and Indian music.

Each Lesson is 50 minutes long.

Learn the beautiful art of playing Tabla with Dibyarka Chatterjee. This is one-on-one private lesson scheduled according to mutual mutual convenience. Techniques, intonation, simple to advanced compositions in various talas (rhythm cycles) and layas (tempo) are taught together with essential information related to the subject.

Private Lessons with Sanghamitra Chatterjee

Learn the beautiful art of Indian singing with Sanghamitra Chatterjee in one-on-one private lessons. Lessons include voice training, practice of scales, fundamental knowledge of Raga and Tala in Indian songs of different types and languages such as Bhajan, Kirtan, Geet, selective film songs, Ghazal, Regional songs, Tagore songs (Rabindra Sangeet), Nazrulgeeti, Atulprader gaan, folk songs and modern songs. Admission is open to all ages and with no pre-requisite. Instruments such as harmonium, tanpura and tabla are be available for the lesson at the center.

Lesson can scheduled according to mutual convenience. Please feel free to request specific date and time while making payment. We will respond.
